The rains have finally arrived in full force at Dunvegan Lodge in Clovelly and the Western Cape dams are filling up at a rapid rate.

We have been experiencing the power of nature at its fiercest with a couple of wild cold fronts lashing Cape Town and the South Peninsula during the past week.

Dunvegan Lodge fully caters for this wild and cold weather with room heating and electric blankets to keep you warm and cosy during the chilly evenings.

Winter is also the time that many local restaurants offer special winter menus that should entice you to visit our scenically beautiful and friendly region. The restaurants listed below are courtesy of ‘The Insider Guide”

Dunvegan Lodge has recently experienced a spate of “number one” experiences which have been amazing to witness.

Besides being rated as the number one guest house in Clovelly on both Booking.com and Trip Advisor, we have had exceptionally talented guests who are at the top of their chosen sports.

Firstly we hosted the ex world number one squash player Nick Matthew, aka the Wolf, during  his visit to Fish Hoek squash courts in order to play a series of  exhibition matches against local and national players. This was part of his #wolfontour and #masjiensquash South African tour during which he was accompanied by, wait for it, the current South African number one player J P Brits as well as the the 6th rated SA player Christo Potgieter. They put on a magnificent display of exhibition squash culminating in a long and hard fought battle between Nick and our local world rated player Rodney Durbach. Nick Matthew has posted on Instagram as well as on Facebook in which he raved about the beauty and hospitality of our beloved country.

Then, at the same time, Kajal Mistry (the 2018 South African no 1) travelled down to Cape Town to participate in the Western Province amateur open ladies tournament which was hosted by Clovelly golf course. She unfortunately lost the finals match on the 18th green to Annelise Swanepoel. She was also a Dunvegan Lodge guest so we were indeed graced with incredible talent during this period.

The weather in Clovelly was stunning during the event and the competitors and family were amazed by the hospitality shown by the Clovelly golf course members and staff during the event.

Cape Town and the South peninsula of South Africa in summer – heavenly!!

The days are long, the weather warm and Clovelly golf course is looking magnificent and ready to welcome visitors to the course or the bar facilities.

Dunvegan Lodge is  in full swing with our long term self catering “swallows” (european or British visitors looking to escape the cold back home) enjoying everything that safe and secure Dunvegan Lodge has to offer – the solar heated swimmimg pool, the magnificent views across Clovelly golf course towards the distant Atlantic ocean and the amazing restaurants of Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek.

Fish Hoek beach has had a visit from a rare Elephant seal (called Buffel) that needed a safe haven to do its annual moult – well it sure found the correct place as Fish Hoek beach is as safe and relaxed as any beach in South Africa. He appears to have departed for destinations unknown but will surely return in the future – everyone returns to Clovelly and Fish Hoek eventually.

This year Dunvegan Lodge is celebrating 21 years operation as a guest lodge with the same owners – Peter and Sylvia McLeod.

This must surely be a record in the hospitality industry and we look forward to welcoming old and new guests to the amazing piece of paradise that we call home.

The calm swimming beach of Fish Hoek is a 12 minute walk down Clovelly road.

Dunvegan Lodge is centrally situated for the main tourist attractions of Cape Point nature reserve, Table Mountain, Stellenbosch and Constantia winelands and Robben Island but still remains an oasis of rural tranquillity. After a long day of rewarding sightseeing the pool and fynbos garden is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy a sundowner before setting out for a memorable meal at one of the local restaurants.

Southern Right whale season is drawing to a close however a pod of whales were still frolicking outside Kalk Bay harbour yesterday.

Now that Spring has definitely sprung and temperatures are on the increase, it is time to dust off the golf clubs and enjoy a round of golf at Clovelly golf course. Clovelly golf course is a mere 10 minute walk down Clovelly road and welcomes visitors both on the course and in the beautiful club house where light meals and a full bar is open to visitors.

We call on the golfing gods to grant all the guests of Dunvegan Lodge who are participating in the Lion of Africa junior golf tournament this weekend, good weather and a fantastic tournament.

It is ideal for an extended family as each bedroom has a separate lounge and fully fitted kitchenette with the main dining/lounge area being ideal for the evening gathering. Now is the time to take the plunge and spoil yourself with the holiday in sunny South Africa that you have been procrastinating about – all our self catering options are available to view online and credit card payments are accepted via a secure payment gateway so there is no excuse!!

We look forwarding to welcoming you to Dunvegan Lodge – Sylvia and Peter McLeod

Dunvegan lodge self catering accommodation is situated on the Southern tip of Africa amidst the evergreen “fynbos” vegetation. This “greeness” is very misleading as the fynbos floral kingdom is amazingly well adapted to the fickle nature of the annual rainfall over the Western Cape and Cape Town.

And it is this very fickle rainfall volume over the past two years that has led to the current drought and thus the water supply crisis that we, as residents, are currently experiencing in the Western Cape.

We welcome all our visitors to sunny South Africa and all the beautiful attractions of Cape Point, Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch gardens and the winelands of Stellenbosch but request that you be aware of the nature of the crisis and that you endeavour not to waste our precious and finite resource.

No water is NO water – there is no quick fix!!

UPDATE 2019:

The winter rains have arrived and the Cape Town dam levels have risen to a level last seen in 2016. (see below)

We have averted the current water crisis but were served with a severe warning that if we do not all collectively take responsibility for our water usage, we may face the same situation in the not to distant future.

As locals and tourists, we need to be aware that water is a finite resource to be guarded and cherished.
